Metaball G

The Metaball cluster at the large scale: 3.5 centimetres and 4.9 grams per earring. The same principle of merging volumes as the 2.5 cm Metaball, in a piece that fills the whole ear — and that in metal would weigh over 20 g per earring, enough to drag on the piercing before the day is over.

That is why it has its own page. The Metaball comes in two sizes, and you don’t choose between them by colour: they are different pieces, with different weight and different presence. These are the colours of the large version.

The form. Spheres of varying sizes meet and melt into one another, with no edges and no joints — the volume is continuous, and what makes it legible is the curve where one mass enters the next. At the large scale the fusion is fully visible: up close you can follow every meeting point, which the 2.5 cm version only suggests.

For those who wear big earrings and gave up on metal. It is the piece for anyone who loves volume at the ear and has already paid the price — the piercing that burns, the earring that droops, the evening that ends with it in your bag. 4.9 grams doesn’t do that.

How is it different from the Metaball Earring?

The size. This is the L, at 3.5 cm and 4.9 g per earring; the other is 2.5 cm and 1.96 g. Same form, different presence.

Is it plastic?

It’s PLA, a polymer made from a renewable plant source — it doesn’t come from petroleum. And it is precisely because it isn’t metal that a piece this size weighs so little.

If it’s biodegradable, will it fall apart over time?

No. PLA only breaks down in industrial composting, under controlled heat and humidity. In a drawer and in everyday wear, it is stable for years.

Will it hurt my ear? Can it cause an allergy?

The post is stainless steel, specified as anti-allergy. Weight is the other half of the answer: an earring this size in metal easily goes over 20 g each, which pulls on the piercing all day.

Can it get wet?

Better not. Take it off to shower and swim, and keep it away from pools and the sea.
